Q. What does a transcription mean?

A.  Transcription basically means the act of transferring spoken word into typed text. It
provides you with an easy reference version of recorded material.

Q. Do I need to outsource for transcription services?

A.  That would depend on each business. Hiring someone in-house to be devoted
towards transcription will increase overhead costs. Client volumes will rise and ebb,
so it will be difficult to assess how many people need to be devoted to this task. The
service needs to be done accurately, so outsourcing transcription services with
experience will be a good move for most businesses.

Q. In what format are the finished transcripts delivered in?

A.  The finished transcriptions are delivered in MS-word, plain text, html, PDF and rtf. RTF
is MS Word friendly format.

Q. How long does it take to receive my transcription?

A.  Standard turnaround time is 3-5 business days. Rush service is available. Contact us
for details. However, one hour clear recording of a non-technical nature, with only
one or two speakers, will take approximately four times the recorded length. If you
add additional speakers, complex terminology or inferior recording quality, this
increases turnaround time dramatically. Each assignment recording is very unique in
terms of content, number of speakers, and rate of speech, whether any layering of
speech is present, accents, background noise and quality of audio recording, and we
therefore do ask that completion timeframes are considered as guidance only.

Q. Why does it take so long?

A.  Basically the main thing is that we speak much faster than even the fastest typist
can type. Also, we don't just type what we hear but we ensure it makes sense.
Although we only type what is being said (unless specifically requested to edit), it's
not just a matter of the right words, but also the right punctuation and, of course,
picking the correct noun (e.g. there or their, two, to or too).
